LYN BERGQUIST

Lyn Bergquist was born in Wellington and was schooled at Wellington Technical College.

He worked in several display and design companies in both Auckland and Wellington including T.V.N.Z. at Avalon before going freelance as a Designer/Art Director with his own company Art Department Ltd.

His film work includes “Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence”, “The Bounty”, “Pallet On The Floor”, “Russian Snark”; a television adaptation of Catherine Mansfield’s “The Garden Party”, "The Golden Hour”, “Orphans and Kingdoms” and “Housebound”.

His several short films Include “Wood’, ‘Salt & Vinegar’, ‘Lup and Laksaah’, “Runaways”, “Pumanawa” and “Restoration”.

For the past 30 years he has been designing and Art Directing commercial productions including several award winners.

Throughout his commercial career, Lyn has pursued his personal interest: painting.

He had his first solo exhibition at Oedipus Rex Gallery in 1991 and exhibited annually until opting out of the Auckland gallery scene in 2005. He has participated in the annual ‘Artists In Eden’ since its inception in 1995 and has completed many commissions and private sales since. His highly popular “Buzzy Bee” series developed his reputation for capturing kiwiana on canvas and his later exhibitions of European influence on landscapes of the Far North; of the Mahurangi coast; and his interest in New Zealand history have all contributed to bringing his work to the attention of art collectors in New Zealand and Internationally.

Establishing him as a painter of New Zealand “culture”.

In February/March 2019 Lyn was granted an Artist Residency at Karekare Auckland where he produced several paintings of the beach.

Lyn was granted another residency at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel in August 2019 and is currently working on paintings from that that period.

In August 2019 Lyn won a prestigious Colour Maestro Award from the Resene Total Colour Awards for his paintings from the Karekare residency.

Lyn is represented in private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand including The Wallace Arts Trust and prize collections in Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, New York, London, Victoria (Canada) and Atlanta.
